Introducing Smitten Studies: Volume One

Updated: Feb 28

A New Way to Teach Black Storytelling & Love on TV

Black sitcoms have shaped how we see love, family, and resilience for generations. From the playful romance of Moesha & Q to the unshakable partnership of Florida & James Evans, these stories have challenged stereotypes and celebrated Black joy in all its forms. Now, a new resource is here to help educators bring these iconic narratives into the classroom—Smitten Studies: Volume One, edited by Larry Lyons and Camden Coley.

Designed as a companion piece to Camden’s debut single Smitten and its newly released music video, this educational study guide is a fresh, engaging way to explore Black love on screen while sparking deeper conversations about media, history, and relationships.

Why Smitten Studies?

This isn’t a comprehensive history of Black sitcoms. Instead, it uses the shows referenced in Camden’s song as a springboard for discussions on how television has evolved in its portrayal of Black love and identity. Through sitcom case studies, media analysis, and interactive activities, students will:

✅ Explore Black love through iconic couples – from Whitley & Dwayne to Rainbow & Dre.

✅ Analyze the power of storytelling – how TV influences real-world relationships and perceptions of Black success.

✅ Celebrate Black joy as resistance – moving beyond struggle narratives to embrace love, humor, and family.

✅ Engage with performance & media studies – with resources tied to Amazing Grace Conservatory and the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, where young Black performers are trained to tell their own stories.

For Educators, By Storytellers

This guide isn’t just an academic resource—it’s a living document of Black storytelling, crafted by educators and artists who understand the power of representation. Whether used in media studies, history, or English classroomsSmitten Studies offers a unique way to connect students to their own histories, dreams, and love stories.

Black love on TV isn’t just entertainment—it’s a cultural blueprint for how we see ourselves and each other. With Smitten Studies, educators have a tool to bring those conversations into the classroom, ensuring that the next generation understands the richness, diversity, and beauty of Black love—on-screen and beyond.
