A Holiday to Remember

Developed in collaboration with Greater Newark Convention and Visitor's Bureau (GNCVB), "A Holiday to Remember" is a multi-site installation that invites lovers of Brick City to reflect upon the watershed moments that helped define our city. Housed at their flagship location overlooking Military Park and their new visitor's center in the Penn Station-adjacent Gateway Project, the pop-up installations recall the Newark that offered war-torn soldiers a much needed respite in 1776 and welcomed the famous confectioners that catapulted our city into the business of sweet treats in the early 20th century.

Gallant Guardians

In November 1776, General George Washington's Continental Army was in retreat and peril after suffering major defeats. On the run from pursuing British forces, they arrived in Newark on November 22nd and camped for 5 critical days in the area now known as Military Park.

This marked Washington's darkest hour, prompting Thomas Paine to write that these were “the times that try men's souls.” The ragged troops used Newark as a respite, regrouping here before continuing their retreat across New Jersey, reaching Trenton on December 2nd.

But Washington would soon take bold action that changed everything. Just weeks later, he led his revived troops back across the Delaware to win two improbable victories at Trenton and Princeton, effectively changing the tide of the war.

At one of their most desperate moments, Washington’s forces found a refuge in Newark to gather strength before the heroic wins that salvaged the revolution in that fateful winter.

Our 7-foot tall nutcracker soldiers are outfitted in fanciful recreations of the uniforms worn by the New Jersey Regiment, famously knownknown as the "Jersey Blues." The dress military uniform commonly consisted of a regimental coat (blue), westcoat (red), cotton shirt, canvas pants, leather leg straps, officer’s sash, tricorn hat, silk stock for neck, and shoes with buckles. The waist belt will held a sword and scabbard.

Holidays with The Big 3

Starting in the mid 19th century, Newark’s retail landscape was dominated by L. Bamberger & Co., Kresge's Department Store, and Hahne & Company.

Known as Newark’s “Big 3,” the department stores dazzled Newarkers with their gorgeous holiday displays and larger-than-life decor. As our first department store, Hahne & Company (1858), had its origins as "Newark Bird Store", our display features several Northern Red Cardinals and white doves alongside limited edition collectible ornaments from Bamberger's.

Candy Coated Cottage

GNCVB's Gateway Visitor's Center welcomes visitors with a life-sized gingerbread house situated between the bubblegum pink Cherry Blossom Cafe and the Tiffany blue storefront doodle adorning the walls.

Before taking a seat in the picturesque Cafe, guests can take a selfie with the gingerbread man that guards a confectionery cottage comprised of Newark's most iconic desserts and festive holiday indulgences, including:

  • iconic candy stores and ice cream parlors like Springfield Avenue’s famed Bischoff’s (1928)

  • William Kolb's 1908 invention of red candy apples and the all-day-suckers he perfected in his shop at 845 Broad Street.

  • Forrest E. Mars, Sr.'s introducing M&M'S Plain Chocolate Candies in 1941

  • Mrs. Wagner's, the beloved homemade pie company known for single-serving apple pies and Christmas mince pies.
